How many times have we all brought useless ," never to be used in anger stuff" which ends up lying in the shed.
I say this , looking at 2 hi-lift jacks we have.
Well due some very embrassing circumstances , in which I have been blackmailed for , one of our cars slipped off the edge of very difficult wet track saturday.
It was impossible to get somewhere to winch it , and no rescue option appeared viable, even the tractor couldn't get within 50m.
However the car was only 2km from my "Shed" and someone remembered we had a hand winch once.
Sure enough, despite 10 years laying in the corner of the shed it was dragged out and an hour later it was operational and pulling the car sideways out of its nasty resting spot.
Rated at 3000kg pull, it was still a real struggle, 2 people, fitter than I, were required to operate it and the shear pin was damaged in the process.
Still , a never to be used again device finally proved its worth.
Unfortunately my wife has used this incident to justify keeping our bread making machine despite its 10 years of dust collecting.
"Pictures with held due to threats."

...and of course anybody who understands Murphy's Law completely will know as soon as you throw it out (or sell it) - the item will be required within weeks or months.
A few weeks ago we sold one of our 3 vehicles - an immaculate sports car we've owned for 12 years - new motor - new everything, Lived in the shed rarely driven - too pretty to leave out in the sun (in Kalgoorlie).
Today I'm walking - because my wife is taking my Patrol to work as I am pulling the head off the car we didn't sell as it decided to do in a head gasket a couple of days ago ... onya' Murphy!!

Ha Ha Robin, - Sorry equally guilty.
Went out with the kids to get a loaf of bread - came back with Bread Maker.
Its now living with the Engel in the spare room.
Should dump
mine too after 10 years and as many loaves of bread ...maybe its the aromas it makes...occasionally.
Maybe sentimentality overrides being "needed".

Yes, the hand winch is still useful for awkward and largely inaccessible pulls, plus a block to ease the work :-)
And like yours, it spends most of its time in the shed, rarely seeing the light of day [as does the high lift jack].
But I won't sell it until I stop traveling to
places where it might be useful.
Indeed, on reflection, I have used it more around
home than in the bush!
Cheers
Andrew

A hand winch and a snatch block makes a deadly flying fox for the ferrets ;)
I shudder when I think of using
mine, but I shudder a bit more at the thought of needing it and not having it.

Hi Muz
Bit busy here , looks like the Pathfinder took out all its big ends on the weekend.
So next week to the Pyrennies will be the first real
test !
If it doesn't work I'll have to sleep with you !
With all the recent trailer posts I thought I'd better see that it doesn't fall apart before describing my "Alternate design Philosophy".

Gday again
So what has broken in the Pathfinder to do all the big ends?? I know back in the days of six cylinder Skylines , the oil pump would come loose and loose oil pressure.

I've still got a tirfor style winch that was purchased in 1999 that has the wire rope untouched. It spent three years with us traveling Australia, then a multitude of various getaways since and has just taken up valuable car real estate. However, some
places we probably shouldn't have ventured to were attempted due to having said item on board. Anyone interested in an unused hand winch?

My tirfor has done a lot of kilometers, but the only time it has been used in anger was to pull some palm tree stumps in my front garden. I did use the Jakeroo as a ground anchor in the process so that may count a 4x4 use!
